This simple tool can help your children (and you)understand their emotions
Parents who are looking for ways to improve communication with children, often find help with a feeling chart. Download one at:

The chart includes pictures in the style of the happy face, except with enough variations to express dozens of different emotions. Young children do not always know the words to express how they are feeling. With this chart, parents can help children look at the different emotions reflected on the faces and then come to understand what they are feeling.
A great exercise is to ask your child pick out his or her emotions from the chart. Then take it a step further and ask your child to pick out your emotions. Or what emotions did their friend have when they were visiting? How did their emotions affect your child? How did your child’s emotions affect their friend?
By doing this activity, you are helping your child in two ways:
- Giving them the ability to name their emotions
- Opening their eyes to people around them, their emotions and the effect of emotions on other people.

I have been doing these types of activities with my children for 15 years. I know they work. In 15 years I’m sure other people have written on the same subject or suggest the same activity. That does not mean I stole it. I did write it. As for references I think I learned this activity from Linda and Richard Eyre but I can’t find the book right now.
There is always room for improvement and I agree that I would like to make this weblog even better. I work full time. I have two teenage girls I spend time with and I try to get a blog done every week. Improvement will come in time. I have talked to the guy about my RSS but I don’t know how to change it. If you click on the RSS a small button appears under it and you have to click on that as well to subscribe.

Even if there is no deterrence, just keeping them away from others for a while will certainly cut down on the problems.I tend to place a lot of blame on socioeconomic circumstances (and culture) too, but until we have a better science of psychology, some sort of punishment (or the threat of it) is still neccessary.
